The ED12 wire can be removed and replaced via the pin connectors on the earbuds. Figuring out how to connect and orient them isn’t exactly intuitive, but the manual has an instructional diagram.

After a little work they do manage to lớn fit nicely out of the box, and didn’t thua the seal when I moved my head & jaw around. The plastic tube that’s contoured for going behind the ear is unfortunately non-malleable, but I have read it’s possible lớn mold it with a hair dryer or other such heat. You could also fit ear pads over it, but those would have khổng lồ be acquired separately. Your can still feel the texture of the woven wire through the plastic tube which is slightly uncomfortable.
The mic is on the right wire & is pretty basic, with a single on/off điện thoại tư vấn button
The joint và jack support are nice and sturdy, & the jack plugged in firmly to my device. One issue with the large angled jack is that it might have trouble fitting with various phone/device cases.
The wire is decently sturdy but I’m not a huge fan of the woven texture that KZ uses with these và some of their other earbuds because it’s prone khổng lồ tangles & microphonics. All in all, though, these are nice, sturdy, và well fitting earbuds for the minimal price.Check them out more on Amazon
Spec/Performance Discussion, Listening Impressions, Other Related Observations
General impression: The ED12 sounds very good for a budget earbud. No detectable flaws that tend to lớn be common with cheaper headphones. The response felt nice & even và consistent, & the detail và clarity were good, with particularly nice separation – you can really hear individual instruments, etc.Sound signature: These definitely have the proverbial V shape – the mids are a little recessed while the trebles are very bright. This results in a little thinness and harshness, & some onset fatigue.Bass: I wouldn’t say the bass sounds emphasized, but the extension is very good. The quoted response range is 10 – 20k Hz which is comparatively good for budget earbuds. Various drops came through without losing clarity or tone, which is a bit of a rarity with budget earbuds. The bass does seem to lớn bleed a little as a result of the V sound signature.Power/Volume: the sensitivity rating is 120 which is comparatively excellent – these got very loud very easily, and I didn’t have to lớn really crank it up with various classical songs like I normally vày to hear them.Isolation: pretty decent – I’d put it at a solid medium, & these should suffice fine for basic commuter use.
Warranty: the ED12 has a one year warranty which is comparatively average.
Overall Take, As Compared lớn The Competition
The KZ ED12 is a very good sounding earbud for the minimal price, with particularly good consistency, detail, & separation. The V shape makes the trebles a bit bright và harsh, which might not be ideal for easy extended listening. They’re also a bit of a chore khổng lồ set up và take in & out.Get the KZ ED12 earbuds on Amazon$25 IEM shootout pre-ambleOne of the coolest phenomenons in audio right now is the big improvements moving forward in the budget sector. $100 headphones can & do compete with $400 headphones, và $25 headphones sometimes compete with $200 headphones. It’s a great time lớn be an audiophile, even if your budget isn’t as large as you’d like it to lớn be.

*I’ve included earbuds. My blog, my rules. I know there’s a difference.
Unboxing / FunctionalityWhen the ZST came out, it was one of the cheapest hybrid (BA và dynamic driver) IEMs in existence and KZ was pretty new to lớn the scene. Packaging was a pile of sad.
" data-image-title="sad-doge-is-sad_o_2792967" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://canthiepsomtw.edu.vn.files.wordpress.com/2018/09/sad-doge-is-sad_o_2792967.jpg?w=300" data-large-file="https://canthiepsomtw.edu.vn.files.wordpress.com/2018/09/sad-doge-is-sad_o_2792967.jpg?w=736" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-7714" src="https://canthiepsomtw.edu.vn.files.wordpress.com/2018/09/sad-doge-is-sad_o_2792967.jpg?w=736" alt="sad-doge-is-sad_o_2792967" />
Just a simple đen box, with a blown plastic insert showing the headphones in a generic entry hole in the tray. The card saying ZST is exactly the same as the one saying ED12 on the ED12. The packaging doesn’t come with retail hooks, or anything khổng lồ make you think this is anything other than a budget offering, which is actually fine because these are a budget offering. You can get them for $9.99 without a microphone from Linsoul now.
The cable included with the IEMs is nothing special, but it is detachable và therefore replaceable. The cable looks a lot lượt thích what came originally with the Fidue A65, but this cable has a kind of tacky feel to lớn the plastic (fingers kind of stick a bit). The strain relief on the cable is good, even at the y-split. The KZ brand uses bespoke 0.75mm 2-pin connectors, whilst the industry standard is 0.78mm. I’m here lớn tell you that you can force 0.78mm pins into this without difficulty, without damaging the 0.78mm pins, and without affecting the sound. It isn’t even a ‘Like A Virgin’ moment (NSFW). The first KZ tai nghe I picked up was for the explicit purpose of putting a slightly large pair of pins into something I didn’t have lớn worry about breaking (Lear BTC-01: a sound surprise in wireless).
The pinholes can take more pin kích thước than the label on the box would indicate, so don’t worry about trying other cables out, you can still use KZ’s cables afterwards. There is another peculiarity in kiến thiết that KZ has done, their eartips. I don’t know why they think this looks lượt thích a star. It has too many points. If they had done a six-point star, I’d say this looks lượt thích a star, but with a 10 point star, that’s a cat’s butthole. The tips, outside of looking funny are mediocre tips. There are better fitting tips out there with better sound profiles. I’d advise that they would be better off ditching the butt tips.
The microphone on the microphone cable has average quality. It is at a good location on the cable. It would have been nice to have more than 1 button, but I understand and tư vấn the likely savings from not having volume controls on the built-in remote.
The shell of both the ZST and the ED12 are plastic with a noticeable lip where the faceplate is glued lớn the body. The shape of the shells isn’t pseudo-custom, but it is trying lớn look lượt thích it is, which makes these look more premium than they are. These don’t have the ergonomics of a pseudo-custom fit, but then they don’t have the price either. Pseudo-custom shells tend khổng lồ come in at a minimum of around $100, so this size factor works pretty good under $20. The plastic doesn’t look terribly durable, but I haven’t tried to lớn smash ’em. I’d lượt thích if KZ, or most of these budget makers included a case, but if you want these to keep ticking and protect them, I suggest you get one. On Gearbest I found some KZ official cases for about $1—it would be easier for everyone if they just included them.
Sound impressions (ZST)Sound impressings were done using the Hi
By R3, which is my favourite budget player right now. The R3 has a little bit of fun lớn the signature, but not too much.
Like most sensible people I started falling in love with music as a child. My first portable audio device was a Sony Walkman (the cassette kind) that I got when I was 10 years old (25 years ago). I toted that lovely brick around with the cheap included headphones for several years in cold Fairbanks, Alaska. Like a Hieronymous Bosch mural, my tastes can be weird & wonderful: from dreamy Japanese garble pop to banks of strings và percussion in the Mariinsky Orchestra. I listen mostly lớn rock.I tend to like neutral bright headphones & I"m a sucker for soundstage. I don"t vì chưng EQ. I believe that cables can make a difference but vì chưng not unconditionally make a difference, same thing goes for balanced outputs. Some axioms:Frequency response isn"t everything, but it is important. If you didn"t volume match, how can you be sure you heard a difference?
Ears are beautiful things, but we hear with our brains và brains can be pretty darn stupid.View all posts by glassmonkey
