Asia - It'S You

Can I just say – I was rather taken aback by the ultimate ending because the way it was all set up seemed like they were gunning for a happy ending? But I guess it makes sense because now this show feels like a solid tribute to the Japanese version, except with a bittersweet twist on its own. And I was right – they did explain it away in the end as childhood friends. I love that the explanation was smooth & cast the show in a totally different light – a story that was meant to make us think twice in some way or disturbed even in the slightest, suddenly just changes its overtone to be nothing but a really sweet childhood story. The fact that both children relied on each other when they were super young and how they found the same sort of love and solace in each other when they were adults is so touching.

(Spoilers alert for the Japanese version!!) I’ve only watched the last 30 minutes of the Japanese version và I already loved all the parallels & departures. In the original version, Yuko pointed the gun at Ryo & shot him. Here, I totally dig the scene when Jin Kang turns the gun not on Moo Young but on herself, in a plea and demand for him khổng lồ stay alive.

Did anyone else love how Moo Young’s joking and nonchalant facade drops the second Jin Kang places the gun on her temple? và how he shifts uneasily because he’s worried for her?

In the original, Yuko then killed herself in the middle of the sea và Kanzo cries from afar. Here, Jin Gook cries as he sees the bloodied bodies up close, knowing that there’s nothing that he could do. In general, I just appreciate that unlike the final confrontational scene in the Japanese version, the Korean version builds up a super intense redemption dialogue which dangles the possibility of a happy ending in front of the leads (and me ugh) before snatching it away cruelly.

Although the analytical side in me can totally see how this all makes poetic sense, the normal side in me as a viewer is just in denial that the show actually went there. The whole freaking time Jin Gook was running towards them, I was shouting for him to call the ambulance…it was also heartbreaking at the same time, khổng lồ see Jin Gook crying for the dead couple;

to see him as the only alive one in the room mourning for a pair of humans who were suffered at the hands of the world.

Park Sung Woong nailed the ending shot in my opinion, together with the music. Honestly, I’m still hoping that in an alternate universe, they are alive; surely, K-dramas leads don’t die that easily. There’s a particular lead I’m thinking of who got shot in the head và turned xanh in the water but even he didn’t die!

Not sure if they ever touched on this in the original, but I liked how they included a shot of the stars, as some sort of relation back to the title of Hundred Million Stars from the Sky.

On the drama as a whole

The ending will make it hard for any future re-watches because I already know where the leads are going to over up (I’m just silly lượt thích that; I avoid all sad stories). But I thoroughly enjoy the ride and right from the get-go, this was a solid & well-thought through piece. I suppose it could be because they already had a canvas to work on, but I’m glad they did it right.

This show makes me feel so much for Moo Young, as a boy who grew up somewhat a sản phẩm of the adults’ choices. Not really anyone’s fault per se, but it’s also sad for Moo Young because he didn’t ask for any part of it. Right till the end, he was manipulated by Jang Se Ran, & that really sealed his fate.

But again, he didn’t ask khổng lồ be played. That moment when he realised Jang Se Ran lied to lớn him và how he laughed first in disbelief, before breaking down was so utterly desolate. Because Moo Young realises that he didn’t need lớn crash & burn, if only he didn’t believe Jang Se Ran’s lie, if only he didn’t entangle with the bad guys. That feeling of what have I done was so well-portrayed here.

Later, the shot of Moo Young cuddling into the arms of Jin Gang was also very heartbreaking, especially when the outtake shows him lying alone on the ground.

It’s even worse come khổng lồ think of it now, that Moo Young just died without ever returning khổng lồ Jin Gang’s arms, but I guess the ending pose was also some sort of parallel khổng lồ that scene.

Ugh, it’s just so hard khổng lồ write on this drama because the ending is so darn tragic, right down to the last words of Moo Young which was ‘I love you’. But I love how his face was in her hand and how even in their pain and sorrow, they had each other.

The plot was also super eventful & there wasn’t a single episode which was boring, although I would say perhaps that the ending episodes were a tad too brooding. I lượt thích that the show even reminded us of the old arc – of Seung Ah, of Yoo Ri’s murder, of Jang Woo Sung. I did wish we could see more of mang đến Rong but I guess it wasn’t meant to be. In any case, wow. Everyone has gone through so much; I kinda even forgot that there was that original murder which teased out all of these underlying plots and relationships! Which is so good because you can really tell the scriptwriters lay a solid foundation.

Finally, what’s a đánh giá without pointing out the cast’s acting? Everyone did such a great job here – Seo In Guk portraying all sorts of dark, lost, helplessness, despondent, and most importantly, in love sides;

**Please chú ý that this đánh giá is about solely this version as a drama, and will not refer lớn the Japanese original whatsoever.**Possibly my favorite melodrama kdrama I have seen. The story of "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" is something so vastly different than most Korean dramas. It is a melodrama that sublimely incorporates the genres of thriller, mystery, romance, và tragedy of all things--and on đứng top of your not-so-typical antihero lead, it sheds some light on some controversial topics (which will not be named due khổng lồ this reviews being spoiler free). The story starts off quite eerily, full of suspense và mystery, và gradually as the drama progresses, the melodrama kicks in while retaining most of the suspense.I vì feel it slightly lost some spark towards the climax due to the script demanding misunderstandings (don"t we love those?). Many conflicts could have been avoided if there was better communication amongst the characters. I suppose this can be said for virtually any drama, but it especially applies in this case. It doesn"t help that some of the situations aren"t fully concluded. I bởi vì also feel there were just a tad bit many plot devices used to progress the story. Some character actions just make little sense, & there was either little or no explanation to them afterwards. I at often times felt frustrated by many of these actions, but fear not; it shouldn"t detract much from your entertainment, as the overall execution and the story itself are quite beautiful.Moving onto the cast--they were absolutely splendid. The leads had amazing chemistry, & everything felt genuine, from hardships to happiness. Seo In Guk plays his first antihero role in Kim Moo Young, và he truly delivers. His character is sharp, mysterious, & conflicting, & much lượt thích Jin Kang, I could not help but be drawn to him, wanting lớn figure out his character, questioning his motives và actions. Moo Young"s dialogue was also quite intricate in that viewers and characters alike could draw multiple meanings from his words. I think this was one element the drama & In Guk pulled off especially well. Jung So Min plays Yoo Jin Kang, a rather strong willed woman who is also very kind, forgiving, & sympathetic. Jin Kang"s strength as a character is not what I would classify similarly to lớn a strong female lead, but she is strong because of her ability khổng lồ endure everything she has experienced, accept it, và move on. Jung So Min conveyed Jin Kang"s emotions so vividly well, the emotional pain is visible through her interactions. Park Sung Woong nails his role as Jin Kang"s brother, Yoo Jin Gook, as well. He portrayed the shifts in emotion as the drama progressed very well. I vày however, wish his character was better written. As for the supporting cast, their performances were stellar as well. Seo Eun Soo pulled off a very convincing girl blinded by love in Baek Seung Ah. Go Min Shi as well with the complications in her character, lặng Yu Ri. Special mention Kim Ji Hyun whom played Jang Se Ran. She completely took me by surprise, both her acting & her character.Most of the faults in the cast were largely due to shifts & errs in the script, not the actors themselves. The actors always delivered in their roles, but often there were actions that just didn"t make any sense, conflicts that could have been avoided if we applied any spec of common sense lớn the situations, which leads back to lớn my stance on there being too many (in)conveniences lớn the story. The music in this drama was synced flawlessly. If I had to compliment any one thing about the drama, it would absolutely be the soundtrack. The eerie, sinister themes added so many elements of suspense khổng lồ drama. Sorrowful, yet calming & somehow uplifting music complemented the melodrama và romance all too well, especially "Lost" by Ahn Ji Yeon. "Someday" by Yi Sung Yol was the perfect song to end off many of the episodes" suspense, while leaving you craving for the next. Và I can"t forget "Star" which was a beautiful addition sung by none other than the 2 leads Seo In Guk and Jung So Min. I feel this tuy nhiên greatly reflects their relationship in the drama. Definite a recommend from me if you"re looking for a melodramatic romance with thriller & mystery! Just take chú ý that this does happen to be a tragedy.
