Review: Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal Review, Senran Kagura: Burst Re:Newal

Almost a year after its Japanese release on PS4, Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal arrives in the West on not just PS4 but also Windows PC from XSEED & Marvelous Europe. Having only gotten into the franchise properly and put a good amount of time into Estival Versus before looking back at earlier games, Burst Re:Newal has been an interesting experience. It is a remake of the 3DS Burst trò chơi but built using Estival Versus as a base and this has resulted in something that gets a lot right but also falters in a few key areas.

Senran Kagura Burst was a Nintendo 3DS exclusive 2.5d brawler. I quite liked the way it played so was hoping to see that brought over to modern systems but Honey Parade Games decided lớn use Estival Versus as a base for this remake. Burst’s story arrives on PS4 in 3 chiều with battle enhancements to Estival Versus hack và slash combat. I get asked about the best trò chơi to get into a franchise with and while most people got in through the Versus games or even Peach Beach Splash, I now have something I can recommend as a nice gateway into the franchise – albeit one that has some annoyances for old and new players.

As a remake of the original, you can play through two story arcs here that are split up into missions totalling at about 80. These missions usually see you tearing through grunts before ending up in an area to lớn face off against a quái vật character. While the structure is pretty straightforward, the combat will make or break the game for you. It plays lượt thích a Musou game but more intimate, with combat that feels better and with fewer enemies so it feels more varied. Combat keeps improving as you unlock more abilities và learn when lớn parry or when to lớn go ham on a small group of enemies near you. It is pretty simple overall but feels great even after dozens of missions.

If you need a break from hacking và slashing through enemies, you can use your hard earned in-game currency lớn unlock music tracks, movies, or cosmetics for the girls. The Senran games have loads of customisation right from the get-go for outfits và accessories. Sadly this release has no online modes at all. I was hoping since this was based on Estival Versus, we would see some form of online but that isn’t available here at all.

This is obviously a huge step up over the 3DS entry when it comes to visuals and performance on the PS4 Pro but I’m still pleased with how good it looks and how well it runs. The animations & effects for skills are slick. Voice acting is just lượt thích it is in the other recent Senran Kagura games which is very well done.

If you played Shinovi Versus or Estival Versus and got bored of the style & combat, this game is most definitely not for you. This might also feel too familiar to you if you recently played the latter since it uses quite a lot from that game. One thing to note is that the PS4 version of Burst Re:Newal lacks the intimacy mode that was present in the Japanese release và in previous Senran Kagura localised releases. This mode will be present in the Steam version.

I’m interested khổng lồ see what the next proper Senran Kagura trò chơi from Honey Parade Games ends up being. After Peach Beach Splash, we’ve only really had spin-offs & a remake. The next release in English will no doubt be Peach Ball on Switch. The Versus style Senran games definitely need to stop, or need a proper overhaul lớn remain fresh going forward.

If you played Yakuza 0 and then played Kiwami, Burst Re:Newal feels lượt thích Kiwami in a lot of ways compared to lớn Estival, which was like 0 in terms of content. It isn’t as good as Estival Versus even though it has a few enhancements over that. It has less content but is still worth playing for fans of the franchise. I feel like this is a great trò chơi for fans who got into the franchise through the Versus games khổng lồ experience the origins of the series. Fans who played the original on 3DS will also find a lot to like here, assuming they enjoy this style of combat.

Life or hometown? I’ll take neither this time

I’ve always been morbidly curious about the Senran Kagura series. Particularly whether or not these games were nothing but overly sexual fan service, or if they had more going on. I first began my journey down the Senran hole with Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash, which was a decent and fun enough game, but still left me pretty clueless about the characters themselves.

So, with developer Honey∞Parade Games looking lớn recreate the 3DS original Burst in a new, fully 3D, thủ thuật ‘n’ slash kích hoạt game, designed to reintroduce everyone lớn these big-chested shinobi, I figured now was the perfect time khổng lồ indulge in my curiosity. However, after sinking nearly trăng tròn hours into Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal, this curious case has just left me bored.

At times the writing also takes itself oddly seriously, while attempting khổng lồ flesh out characters with the most common tropes imaginable. There are still plenty of light-hearted and charming moments lớn be had, but the poor presentation mentioned earlier just left me feeling numb after long play sessions. By the over of the HanzÅ campaign, I was skipping nearly every dialogue scene just khổng lồ get it all over with.

However, what separates Burst Re:Newal from the 3DS original are their distinctive game play styles. Burst was a 2.5d beat ’em up, while its newly released counterpart is a fully 3d hack ‘n’ slash title, taking clear inspiration from the Dynasty Warrior series. Combat essentially boils down khổng lồ your typical light & heavy attacks with a phối of snazzy air juggles và ground pounds.

You can also spice things up further with the option to start any mission in the “Frantic” mode. This basically strips your character down to lớn their underwear, resulting in a massive drop to lớn their defense, while also greatly increasing their attack. It’s a good option to lớn make things go a bit quicker once you’ve mastered parrying, as you can just simply spam special movies after each successful parry.

However, all of the underwhelming combat throughout these missions won’t prepare you at all for the sudden difficulty spike these campaigns end on. Without spoiling too much, a particular final trùm cuối takes forever, thanks lớn a beefy health bar & wonderful near one-shot kill move. Throw that in with no checkpoints and my eyes were rolling out of my skull up until I found a specific spot that let me simply whack it lớn death without ever taking damage.See the image above? Those poor grunts spawned behind an invisible wall!
